‘Be A Tree’ educational program goes to schools in Northern Ireland UK.

‘DogSense Goes To School’ project is proud to introduce the ‘Be A Tree’ educational program, where one of our presenters will be educating the audience to best intepret what a dog is telling us humans, so as to avoid any unnecessary dog bites.

What Is The ‘Be A Tree’ Program | Dog Awareness For Children

Dogs are amazing animals. They love us unconditionally. They protect our homes. They find lost children. They fetch the newspaper. They swim. They lie by the fire. They pull sleds in the snow. They predict seizures and sniff out cancer cells. They lead the blind. They hear for the deaf. They comfort the elderly. They leap from helicopters to rescue the drowning. They roll in dead stuff. They chase the cat. They dig up the garden. They die for us in war time. They sniff out drugs and bombs. They pull wheelchairs. They race agility courses. They steal the remote. They warm our feet and our hearts.

And yet, despite thousands of years of living with dogs, they remain largely misunderstood by humans. When a dog bites we interpret this in human terms.

In most cases the bite is a normal, instinctive dog behaviour. The dog that bites is not necessarily an aggressive dog or a bad dog – he is just a dog living by instinct. To prevent dog bites we need to understand what motivates the dog to bite and reduce risk through modification of both human and dog behavior.

The Be a Tree program presented by Dog Sense is a seminar program designed for school age children. They learn how to read dog body language and act safely around dogs.

The ‘Be a Tree’ program is an innovative and interactive program that we at DogSense.uk.com are introducing to schools through out Northern Ireland, UK. Children will learn to read dog body language and how to act safely around dogs by looking at large format photographs and by playing interactive games.

The ‘Be A Tree’ Program | Concepts Covered

‘Be a tree’ if a strange dog approaches or any dog is threatening or frightening

Dog Behavior Problems – Educating Humans, Rehabilitating Dogs!

Dog behavior problems stems from us humans wanting our canine friends to act as little furry humans and use the psychology that we would use with our children. This in itself can be the main cause of our dogs’ unwanted behaviour.

Dogs have no idea what we are saying to them in our language and only associate the words with eventual outcomes of the situation. Dogs are first and foremost pack animals and look for leadership in different methods than we naturally demonstrate. So dog behaviour problems should be prevented quickly and easily.

The Start Of Dog Behaviour Problems – How To Avoid This!

A pack animal constantly looks for leadership and if none is to be found, it will naturally assume the role itself. This is where many of the problems arise as your dog is not up to being that leader, in our human environment it cannot control many situations and as a leader stresses over the lack of control and the safety and security of it’s pack – you and your family.

Look at the situation through your dogs’ eyes, when it enters your home – you and your family become the pack and someone has to be the leader, a hierarchy throughout the pack must be established.

There are various areas where your dog seeks this necessary leadership and we as humans often miss the signs. This leads your dog to step into the role and become protector and decision maker of the home, and you are then viewed as a lower pack member who need to be controlled and taken care of.

Read more here… What Is Wrong With My Dog?

Dog Behavior Problems – At DogSense we teach you rather than your dog!

We teach a kind and gentle method that your dog understands and how to install you as the ‘alpha’ or pack leader

Covering all areas, you will learn to speak their language, thus giving you the necessary tools for a calm, relaxed and balanced dog.

You will be able to communicate in a manner your dog understands.

You will be able to go on a walk with your dog looking up to you for direction.

Imagine being able to come and go as you please without any fuss.

Feel how good it would be to have visitors without any unwanted or embarrassing behaviour.

Prevent unnecessary barking with a calm phrase.

This is what you can look forward to with dog behavior problems the help from DogSense Home Consultation Package!

Puppies, Excitement In the Air, But Now What?

It is always an exciting time when puppies are brought into a new home. However, integrating that puppy into our daily lives is not always easy and to get the most out of the relationship, and to have a happy and balanced dog, it is important that the first few weeks of life together set a pattern of good behaviour for your pet’s future years in your family – the pack in a dog’s world.

It is vital to remember that dogs are not little humans and that they do not speak any of our languages. Dogs are pack animals and as such are dependant on a hierarchal system and their place in that hierarchy. Puppies can adapt to different conditions, starting life in a new and different home having being taken from mum and the litter and placed with a human family is a big step. It is so important that you make them feel safe and secure and provide for them.

Read more here…

On the home-front, ‘What rank does your dog have?’

To do this they must learn their place within your pack. Puppies will take comfort in being a submissive member of the pack and the lack of responsibility brings a stress free and happy life.

The most important area in preventing a breakdown in the pet owner relationship is to learn and understand your puppy’s language so that you can communicate effectively and understand the signals that they send you, many of which can be easily missed if we do not know what to watch for. In this way you can fulfil the areas that your puppy will look to you for leadership.

We can help!

Robbie Clarke from DogSense is a leading expert in dog aggressive behaviour, these are just some of the symptoms of aggression.

DogSense believes that almost every dog can be helped and returned to a normal and balanced member of the pack. To back this up we offer a money back guarantee if YOU are not happy with the results of our training.

Aggression is a natural, reflex action in all dogs. It is an inherited part of their pack orientation.

Aggression is an unwanted behaviour and as a responsible dog owner you must recognise the signs of aggression in your dog and deal with it immediately!

If you are asking yourself ‘is my dog aggressive’ you can be dealing with a:

Potentially dangerous situation, when a dog shows any signs of aggression as mentioned above. It is recommended that professional help is sought, particularly if a dog’s aggression is directed towards humans.

Aggression can be put into two types:

Aggressive Dog Behaviour - Dominant Aggression

Dominant - a dominant dog holds its head and tail high, stands tall, walks with assurance and stares aggressively at other animals.

A dominant dog commands and expects respect. A naturally dominant dog will attempt to run everyone else, including his owner when leadership is not given.

It is also good to note that these signs can also show on small size dogs. So do not be fooled by believing that it only involves large dogs.

Your small beloved pet, can be a terror at heart!

Aggressive Dog Behaviour - Fear Aggression

Fear Induced – fear aggression occurs when a dog is scared, it does not matter if a situation has just occurred that scared the dog, it may only be an association that brings on the fear.

Most dogs that suffer fear aggression will first attempt to avoid any situation that scares it, if avoidance is not possible then it will attempt to escape or flee.

Only when neither option is available will the dog feel its only option is to fight and it will become aggressive and bite.

Aggression is a natural reaction of all dogs as part of their pack mentality. When living in a pack it is necessary for a dog to display aggression to maintain its position in the pack hierarchy or to protect its food, its pups or itself.

It is therefore necessary that YOU position yourself as the alpha and project the leadership that is sought from your dog!

Dog aggressive behaviour must not be tolerated or allowed to escalate!

A dogs inherent pack instincts makes it so important that an owner immediately establishes himself as the leader or alpha. Your dog needs guidance, structure, motivation and as much love as you can give.

If you fail to provide leadership, and shower your dog with love and affection the only result will be you may gain the dogs trust but you will never gain the required respect.

All you require is the knowledge to understand your dogs language, enabling you to recognise dog aggressive behaviour, to communicate and to guide.

Aggression can be overcome with leadership, patience and repetition, never ever give up on an aggressive dog – dog aggressive behaviour is only a symptom.

When dealing with an aggressive dog – please seek professional help.

Crucial Tips When Thinking To Look At Rescue Dogs

Dogs end up in a Rescue Centre for many varied reasons, they may have simply got lost, their owners have moved – possibly abroad and cannot take them with them, owners passing away, abandoned or rescued from abuse and mistreatment.

The Rescue Centres throughout the country do an amazing job for our canine friends and having visited many, DogSense cannot praise enough the staff and many volunteers, who devote their time and efforts to improving the lives of these dogs and they do all in their power to assist each dog in being re-homed to a caring and loving human pack.

Comforting to know…

It should be remembered that irrespective of a dogs past, they do move on very quickly and do not dwell on past events, it is with this in mind that rescued dogs have moved on to work with the police, customs, search and rescue and even as guide dogs for the blind.

Rescue dogs will make every bit as good a pet as any dog from a breeder and with enough dogs in the world without homes it is a viable option to consider and one that I commend and support.

Planning Ahead Before Taking On A Rescue Dog

It is important before taking on a rescue dog that you research and give great consideration to the idea of bringing one into your home. There is nothing worse for a dog than being given a new home and the owners finding they cannot cope and return the dog to the centre… so I encourage you to think long and hard before committing to this new lifestyle.

Can you afford to feed the dog, care for and provide the cost of veterinary care if required?

Give consideration to the change of lifestyle, how much time will your dog be left ‘home alone’?

What plans will you make for taking holidays abroad? Importantly, will you have time to devote to taking your dog for walks?

The walk is an important ritual, an opportunity for you to demonstrate your leadership, for the dog to socialise as well as the necessary exercise – if your dog is not getting enough exercise, chances are neither are you!

Do not rush the process of finding a dog.

You should look for a dog that matches the energy levels of you and your family. Look for a dog that is calm and submissive, one that shows interest in you and is not looking to you as a ‘key to the door’.

Bringing Your Rescue Dog Home To Meet His Extended Family

When you bring your dog home, take it for a long walk, this will burn off excess energy, allow the dog to familiarise itself with the new territory and to enable you to bond and establish yourself as the pack leader.

TIP: After the walk, be sure to go through any door first as the leader should and invite the dog to follow.

Once Home, What Now?

Rescue Centres – Here Are Some Tips For Rescue Dogs:

Never shout at or use any physical punishment.

Allow other family members to assist in the tasks of exercise, feeding, grooming etc. Do not allow the dog to become reliant on one individual family member. The pack depends on balance and consistency.

Ignore all attention seeking behaviour.

Be patient, calm but assertive when dealing with behaviour problems, it may take time to modify unwanted behaviour.

Remember you can do anything with your dog – allow him on the sofa, to sleep in your bed; however anything your dog does must be on your terms.

Any behaviour that you do not feel comfortable in modifying, particularly issues with aggression, it is always advisable to consult a professional.

PLEASE NOTE: *ignore unwanted behaviour – this means when you or you family feel guilty when he pines or when you feel guilty just soon after you have reprimanded him. It is good for you to turn your back or walk away from this type of behaviour. His mother would do it too.

A balanced dog has a home and a pack, it is loved, well trained and socialised and it has regular walks, play and motivation. Your dog should always have a job. A balanced and happy dog does not stress if left alone for short periods, it should be easily handled and groomed.

Even so, I had an uncanny way of communicating with them. I have always had a fascination and an affinity for dogs of all types of breeds, from Beagles to Rottweilers. Always needing to know why they behaved like they do.

Now, I would like to share it with you and I sincerely hope that you will find it rewarding too.

About DogSense.uk.com

When referring to a canine relationship, love and respect are two unrelated emotions.

Respect is gained through hard work, education and experience. This is the most important lesson I have learned in the many years working with dogs.

Dog training does not necessarily have to begin when you acquire a 10 week old puppy (although it should) or when your 12 year old pet dog bites a child.

In reality it begins on the day you make up your mind to learn how dogs think, that is, understanding dog behaviour and in turn, how they relate to the world they live in.

It begins when you decide to communicate with your dog in a manner that both you and your dog respect and understand.

It begins when you make up your mind to develop a meaningful relationship based on trust, communication and control. Your dog will start exhibiting the sign of unbreakable bond, the sign of love for his master.

In a dog’s world!

Domestic dogs look at the family they live with as their family pack. If the humans do not become pack leaders then the dog will step up and assume the role. That is how and why dogs become dominant and we assume that they are acting up or just that they do not like a particular person, animal or even a particular surrounding.

So now it is fair to ask the question…

On the home-front, ‘What rank does your dog have?’

Each pack must have a leader and a hierarchy. I have been providing owners with steps, tips and techniques to demonstrate leadership when a dog enters your home and becomes part of ‘your pack’.

The DogSense Training Method

The quick answer is that we use them all. Every dog is different so we are trained in virtually every method that is out there as well as some of our unique methods found nowhere else.

The corner stone of our training program is based on education in dog psychology and treating every dog with the respect all of God’s creatures deserve. We first assess the situation and only then, work a method from there onwards.

Generally, positive reinforcement based methods are used first, to teach trust and exactly what actions we want from them and then we teach responsibility through gentle corrective based training to create reliability in all environments.

To be sure that every dog completes his course with a wagging tail and aura of confidence, all dogs and their owners will receive the patience they deserve.

We do not cram obedience or muscle the dogs around.

Owners will not be rushed through an appointment or charged for lessons that need to go over the scheduled time. You and your dog will trust your trainer, we promise.

In conclusion:

In the wild, the dog’s survival depends on a disciplined, organized and strong pack, where every member knows its place in the hierarchy and the rules established by the alpha dog.

As a dog behaviourist, I teach the owners to remain calm, positive and consistent in giving the dog rules that helps him to live in a human pack without unwanted behaviour. In turn, establishing trust for his pack leader.

It is possible to communicate with canines, to speedily correct and control unwanted behaviour in a kind, humane and gentle manner.

DogSense does not condone or use methods that involve shouting, punishment of any kind or use of any punitive equipment.

Our methods require patience, nonviolent means, lots of repetition, and positive reinforcement.
